Military Awards, Education, & Experience

I enlisted in the United States Army Reserves in August, 2002. I fulfilled my commitment to my country in August, 2010, leaving the Reserves as a Staff Sergeant (E-6).  I held a Secret level Department of Defense clearance.

During my eight years of service, I deployed twice and attended a number of military education courses. Below is a summary of my military experience.

Military Training & Education

 

  • BNCOC Common Leader Training, Ashland, NE, Completed Aug., 2007. Studied leadership, personal and performance counseling, written and verbal communications, cultural awareness, ethical behavior, problem solving, and resource management.
  • Tactical Combat Casualty Care Course, Upland, CA. Completed Feb., 2006. Studied special tactics and immediate trauma care for situations when remote care must be provided.  
  • Combat Lifesaver Course, Upland, CA. Completed Feb., 2006. Studied advanced first aid, including controlling bleeding, opening an obstructed airway, treating chest wounds, and inserting intravenous fluid lines in emergency combat situations.
  • Advanced Radio Communications Course, Fort Bragg, NC. Completed Dec., 2005. Studied the set-up and use of different radio and communication systems in a field environment. 
  • Horseback Riding and Mule Packing Course, Baker, CA. Completed Oct., 2005. Studied horseback riding, mule train packing, leading a mule train up and down rocky mountain trails, and basic animal first aid. 
  • Warrior Leader Course (WLC), Fort Lewis, WA. Completed Oct., 2005. Studied junior level leader topics, including leadership, training, war fighting, field training, and administration. 
  • PBUSE Software Course for Property Book Officers, Fort McCoy, WI. Completed Aug., 2005. Learned to use new Army property book tracking system to track logistics of individual and company equipment. 
  • Advanced Individual Training (AIT), Fort Bragg, NC. Completed Oct., 2003.  Studied Psychological Operations, including mission planning, use of maps and relevant intelligence information to support tactical operations, analyzing and responding to foreign propaganda, targeting an audience, marketing a propaganda product, using media and printing equipment, applying persuasive techniques in conducting counter propaganda campaigns, audience analysis, interpersonal and cross cultural communication, and overcoming cultural biases. 
  • Basic Training, Fort Jackson, SC. Completed Jul., 2003. Studied marksmanship, physical conditioning, navigation, combat techniques, first aid, and weapons. 

Deployments

  • Tikrit, Iraq; 2004. Psychological Operations Specialist. Conducted tactical psychological operations missions, using intelligence, responding to foreign propaganda, targeting an audience, marketing propaganda products, using media equipment (including printing presses), persuasive techniques, and cross-cultural communication. Conducted surveys with local populace to evaluate the effects of planned and current products. Conducted face-to-face PSYOP with local populace. Related civilian occupations include editor, intelligence research, and marketing.
  • Bagram, Afghanistan; 2006-2007. Psychological Operations Sergeant and Supply Sergeant. In addition to the above, trained and supervised unit supply/maintenance personnel. Tracked, requested, received, and turned in all property book items. Administrative functions required to keep property books and supporting documents current in accordance with directives and authorization documents. Supervising duties involving request, receipt, storage, issue, accountability, and preservation of individual, organizational, installation, and expendable supplies and equipment. Receiveds, inspected, inventoried, loaded, unloaded, organized, stored, issued, delivered, and turned in organizational and installation supplies and equipment. Researched the acquisition of unusual or hard-to-fill supply requests. Conducted inventories using component listing to inventory components of end items. Responsible for property books totaling $7,704,962.24. Issued and received small arms. Secured and controlled weapons and ammunition in secure area. Provided technical guidance to lower and upper graded personnel. Related civilian occupations include shipping-and-receiving supervisor, stock clerk/supervisor, warehouse or storage yard manager, and logistical support.
